USDT circulates on more than a dozen networks, but two dominate merchant conversations right now: TRC-20 (USDT on Tron) and TON (USDT as a jetton on the TON blockchain). If you're deciding where to accept payments, here's a grounded comparison — not a sales pitch for either side.

The short version#

Fees and speed#

Both networks are fast and cheap compared to older chains. TON's block times are sub-second, and Tron's aren't far behind for practical purposes — for a merchant, the difference between "confirmed in 20 seconds" and "confirmed in 60 seconds" rarely matters to a buyer at checkout. Paysell adds a consistent, deliberate confirmation step on top of TON's own speed: waiting for masterchain inclusion plus three blocks and cross-checking against a second data source, which brings the total time from payment to webhook to about a minute. That's a choice about reliability, not a limitation of the network.

Where the two chains differ more is fee predictability. Tron's fee model depends on account "energy" and bandwidth, and during periods of network congestion, transaction costs for the sender can spike or transactions can queue. TON's fee model has stayed more predictable in practice, which matters less to you as a merchant — since Paysell covers the gas on incoming payments — but matters to your customers when they're the ones paying to send USDT to your invoice address.

Wallets and audience#

This is where the two ecosystems genuinely diverge. TRC-20 USDT is supported by almost every general-purpose crypto wallet and exchange withdrawal option, which makes it a safe default for a broad, chain-agnostic audience that's used to Tron because so many services default to it.

USDT and TON on the TON network live natively inside wallets like Tonkeeper and MyTonWallet, and TON has deep integration with Telegram — a Telegram wallet is TON-native by design. If your customers are already inside the Telegram ecosystem, discovering and using a TON wallet is a much shorter path than asking them to set up something unrelated to an app they already use daily.

Why Paysell started with TON#

We built Paysell on TON first because we wanted to do one thing well before doing many things adequately. TON's fast finality, predictable fees, and tight integration with Telegram's user base made it a strong foundation for a payment processor focused on reliability: fewer edge cases to handle, a smaller and more consistent set of wallets to support, and a confirmation model we could make genuinely trustworthy rather than "probably fine."

Building support for a second chain properly — reliable indexing, its own confirmation logic, separate withdrawal infrastructure — is real engineering work, and doing it halfway would undermine the reliability we've built for TON merchants.

What's next#

Tron support is on our roadmap, but it isn't available today. If your business needs to accept USDT TRC-20 right now, Paysell isn't the right tool for that yet, and we'd rather tell you that directly than have you find out mid-integration. Automatic conversion between assets is also a roadmap item, not a current feature — every payment you receive today settles in the asset the buyer sent, in TON or USDT on TON.

Note: If Tron support matters to your business, let us know through a support ticket — it helps us prioritize.

For merchants already comfortable with TON, or whose audience overlaps with Telegram, accepting USDT and TON today is straightforward: register a store, and see our e-commerce guide for a typical setup. For everyone else, we'd rather you wait for Tron support than have a mismatched expectation about what Paysell does today.
